There are so many things that we use in our daily lives that are synthetic products and made with VOCs (volatile organic compounds). There are alternatives to all these. Alternatives can be expensive and not very convenient to come by. Where should we draw the line? Should we draw it for our whole family? Should we draw it just for our newborn? hmmm.....
Here's a few that I'm thinking about....
PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) is found in some AIO (All In One) cloth diapers, changing pads, bibs, mattresses, mattress pads, and more...
Alternative to PUL in its use as a water-resistant layer is wool. Wool has the unique property of being really absorbant without feeling wet to the touch. It's anti-bacterial, doesn't grow mold nor mildew.
PLASTIC
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Vinyl contains phalates, a chemical added to make the plastic flexible, and a human carcinogen. It's found in #3 plastics which used to be commonly used in toys, is used for shower curtains, small yard/baby pools, and other packing materials.
PC (Polycarbonate), sometimes found as a #7 plastic, is used to make some drinking bottles, some baby bottles, microwavable ware, and more. It's made with BPA (bisphenol A) which can leach into food and water as it ages.
Alternatives to PVC and PC are #2, 4, and 5 plastics which don't leach carcinogens or endocrine disruptors, as well as the new corn-based, PLA (polylactide) which is highly biodegradable, and finally glass, ceramics, and stoneware.
