The Blog is Back!! All about DIAPERS!!!

Hey everyone, it's been quite some time since this blogger has posted.....

Many of you have been asking about a future (or past....heehee, you weren't invited!!) baby shower. After thinking long and hard about the best time, we've decided that we want you to know the baby's name/sex/size before you buy anything (else....heehee). Therefore, we'd like the baby shower after the baby is born.

As some of you know, Marisa has been sewing/serging cloth diapers for the little one. She decided to start with some free patterns and intended to buy a pattern or two once she got going. After finishing a few, though, she found she could easily alter it herself. If you need help with one at any point, Marisa can help you. Her diapers have been tested and approved by Nicolas Carson.

For those of you who have been out of the diapering update-loop/cloth diapering-loop, this is called a "fitted pocket diaper". It's a 4-layer+soaker piece of clothing. The outer layer is made from Birdseye diapering fabric (a 100% cotton more-absorbent-over-time/washes-fabric). Two layers of old 100% cotton tee shirts make the inner. The surface touching the baby is fleece or microfleece. It has 4-8 layers of tee shirt/flannel/other 100% cotton "soaker" in the pocket. This pocket enables the user to fit the diaper for short use versus overnight or long use by placing a 4 or 8-layer soaker in the pocket. It's also nice, 'cause you can wash and dry the diaper and soaker separately, which cuts down on drying time. I guess I should have prefaced this all by saying, "I've heard..."





Alright, so 070707 now, and I've finished the stash-60diapers/137wipes/63soakers/7covers as much as they'll be finished.....



Smaller wipes that will fit a normal wipe container/warmer and bigger ones for everything else...

more fun......Diaper covers.....

So, the next step in the diapering world is a diaper cover. Now, most of us are familiar with the vinyl pants with elstic around chubby baby legs. This has all been improved in the diapering sector. We'll be using wool. You can research it yourself....it makes perfect sense....

Now, the free patterns for wool diaper covers ask for 100% untreated wool. The one I use calls for Merino roving. I've come to understand that roving is the combed and washed, but not unspun wool. Merino wool is from New Zealand and is super soft.

This is a picture: People have some really pretty pictures online. I actually went in to Village Wool here in Albuquerque and felt some. It feels very nice.

Anyhow, I wanted to start with spun wool since that's what I'm familiar with and 'cause I didn't know how the project would turn out. The pattern gave two sizes, 0-8 months, and 10-24 months:

So, these are the two sizes. I put a ruler in between (THOSE ARE INCHES) so you can sort of see there's a difference....

Next, I read on the site where I got the pattern, http://www.mothering.com/discussions, that people who don't use the roving, double their yarn to knit (I know how interesting this must not be to a non-knitter):

It's really nice, 'cause nothing can fit through those stitches, but it's still really soft and stretchy....

My mom thought the legs may be too tight with the two-ply-ness, so I had to change the pattern (heehee we all know I've never used a recipe nor pattern of any kind without changing it anyway)

So, you may be able to tell when I hold it up to the sunlight, that the edges and top ribbing are thin (one-strand), while the middle is thick (two-strand).

We're TOTALLY prepared....heh heh....sure

So, most of you are probably thinking, "great, so you have diapers. last time I checked, a baby needs lots more preparation than that"......

Well so, the truth is, we have no idea what we really NEED..... There's all those lists by Babies 'R Us and Baby Depot that tell you you'll need a year's supply of everything they have. Eh....we sorta don't think so, but we have prepared a bit.....with help....

Paul's building a cradle (pictures and details will be featured in a future post). We are borrowing a crib and changing table.

We're not using a mattress for the crib and cradle as we've read http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/100/crib. A mattress pad, which I'll make a cotton cover with a pocket (much like the pocket-ed diapers you've learned about on this here blog) for each of the crib and cradle. Eh...Or we may want a organic rubber/wool pillow for the cradle mattress....hmmm we're still thinking....
